THING NUMBER 23

Well I finally made it. I thought I was pretty computer savvy until I started these 23 things. Funny I can do just about anything in excel and word but I really found some of these things challenging, I guess that’s good thing after all it’s all about learning isn’t it? Of course some things were more fun than others, I really enjoyed you tube, I think everyone enjoyed “that thing”. If you want a good laugh just go to you tube and type in funny. I’d like to continue down the list of things but I promised myself that I would go back and spend some time on the things that I had to rush through to reach the dead line. This was such a great idea to work on this project I think it helped all of us to challenge ourselves.

My daughter, son-in-law and our weimeraner #4, Rajah. My daughter has another one, her name is Princess Maddie, #5!

NetLibrary and e-books Thing number 22

I created a NetLibrary account. And checked out my first e-book, I'm not sure I would want to read a book in this format, pretty hard on eyes. Once I leave work I'm not one for sitting in front of a computer when I get home. Now that I gave my "internet" computer to my son to take to school, well it's just not happening. This would be a really great tool for students doing research though, not to necessarily read word for word but to use the reference titles for specific search criteria, I think would work great.

Thing number 21

Well I searched and searched for an interesting podcast, again I geared towards news. Podcasters News (oddly enough) is how it is described. I could see some use for podcasts in the library setting. It would just be the matter of finding the right podcasts for the subject area of interest. Perhaps finding pogcast sites for reviewing books and videos for purchase or something of that sort.

Thing number 20

Well that was just too funny, I added my You Tube Video and sorry it has nothing to do with the library thing, because it's Halloween. I had to find something scary yet funny I think I found the best one. Just watch.

ImaginOnExpress Checkout, what a great idea, kind of like a tutorial on using the self checkout, this type of video would be great for patrons afraid of doing things like that on their own. Moving along.....

Happy Halloween

Thing number 19

It took me a while of searching subject areas before I decided on something that interested me. I went to the short list but there were still so many to choose from. I visited Odeo, peertrainer for health and fitness and medstory. I can think of so many uses of most of these websites for helping patrons find information. I really like Pandora, you search for a song by title or by artist and it will create a station of songs similar to the artist or music that you picked. This would be of great to use for to the library, to search for songs, artists and other history. To find an artist you just type the name under find an artist and it will give you some history along with a biographical excerpt about the artist., below that they have “selected discography” which lists their albums titles of songs and more. All those years of creating a song index in Dbase (not even sure if that’s how it was spelled way back when). I wonder if they still have those files in RS. You can actually make selections and it will just play your favorite songs.

NewZohoword

I am practicing a word document so that I can post it to my blog. I really like this ZOHO writer and I am sure I will like the spreadsheet function. It's the perfect tool that is free, doesn't need software installed and it takes some of the power away from the large conglomerate company/monopoly that Microsoft Office has become. Now businesses will have more opportunities in what choices they make in their selection of software, word document, spreadsheets and other tools.

Thing number 18

Now this is more up my alley.

Thing number 16 and 17 and Wikis this and that

I've used before either by accident or intentionally. I actually asked a question and the google search took me right there. I was happy with the results....I first heard about wikipedia years ago on TV it wasn't a good review since they were talking about someone's autobiography and he was complaining that a lot of the information was untrue. I guess that's the chance you take you just have to keep in mind that much of the information could be simply someone's opinion but isn't that true of non fiction books also?

This is one thing that I was already familiar with and have used in the past for various reasons. Although a bit controversial I find it pretty interesting and have found what I believe to be true even though just about anyone can add or edit the information. I created and account and did some exploring. I especially found the Library Success: a best practices wiki to be most interesting as it relates to libraries.

I finally made it in to PLCMC Learning 2.0, at first I didn’t have any luck with logging into PLCMC learning 2.0 I tried so many passwords and none of them were accepted. Any way I finally made it and added my blog to the list of favorites, going back to check out the other ones. See ya later!

13, 14 and 15 Things
Watched the on line tutorial to learn about Del.icio.us what a great web tool to use to communicate with friends and relatives that are out of town. Especially nice is the fact that it is a great tool to use when you're torn between two computers. (Not my problem anymore since I gave my computer with the internet to my son to take to school.) Oh well I was ready for another one anyway, soon.
I'm ready to move on, whoops out of time, darn it. I'll add to this log tomorrow at lunch time. Read to move on to Several Habits of wildly successful Del.icio.us users. Kind of like a book mark so that I don't forget AGAIN where I left off.

Thing number 11 and 12
Library Thing and Rollyo, both were interesting sites. I created a search scroll and attached a link to my blog. It's titled "News of the Day" I am a huge news station fan. When there is nothing else on TV I will resort the the news channels, people are so interesting some of the coverage is good new too, it doesn't always have to be bad to be "news".
I used to be a big reader when I was younger, then as I got older and busier it's been a struggle to find the time to get back on track. Library thing is wonderful tool that could help me get back into it. It's alway interesting to see what others are reading.
There are so many ways to use the internet doing library 2.0 is teaching me just how many different ways you can search for information. Rollyo is another tool that I would like to come back to and explore some more. I created and account and created a search roll.

Thing number 10

Image generator, I'm not sure I would use it. I guess it could be used for family and friends that live out of town. There were so many to choose from I actually looked for the easiest, would like to check some other ones out on my home computer.

Thing number 8 and 9

I worked my way through thing 8; RSS feeds. Although, I noticed the rss icons I never realized what they were used for. I'm not sure what I would use this for right now but I'll keep it on the back burner.

Checked out some of the blogline search tools, worked mostly with feedster and technorati, I seemed to like feedster better. I searched for blogs concerning libraries as instructed and came up on some interesting blogs. I have to move on now, I am hoping to come back to technorati explore it a little more. How bout that tutorial narrator.....kind of put me in mind of Miss South Carolina...want to yank my nails out listening to it.

Regardless I created the postcard below. Having an exchange student was interesting and fun we learned a lot about each others culture. But don't let anyone fool you a teenager is a teenager no matter where they come from, oh and by the way, they all cost money too.

Thing number 5 - 7

Finally was able to post a real picture....I had a hard time with some pictures, not sure why maybe because they were from someone else's camera. I didn't feel like I could move on until I accomplished this thing. Now here I go.....

Soccer Benefit, raised $800.00.

These kids held a benefit soccer game to raise money for a former team mate after their house burned down to the ground, no one was hurt. These kids raised $800.00 by holding a chinese auction and other raffles. It was originally supppose to be the girls soccer team against the boys, but they changed their minds once they began to play. What a cold, fun night!

Thing 5 and 7

Accomplished thing number 5 and 7 will come back to 6; Flickr mashup and third party sites. Looks like it might take more time than I acutally have today. Everyone seems to be learning a lot during this process... so much information to absorb. It's great to have this opportunity, I am truly participating in life long learning.

Readabook

My blog title is readabook, would you believe that's what people called me when I was younger. How did they know I would end up working at a library? Guess what my name is.
